Naturally, to serve this challenging population, the Mobile County Public School System must be innovative. While many school districts across the country enlist the help of professionals, community members, and parents, rarely do they take the time ask what students think about the quality of their education. But, the Mobile school system did by commissioning the Equity Project.
Using more than 100 students from all 14 high schools in the District, they embarked upon the unprecedented task of auditing the course offerings of each of their high schools to determine the level of equity. In addition, they helped to develop important questions to ask their peers about the quality of instruction, the safety of the school environment, the perception of climate, and even why students skip or dropout of school. The effect was 9,100 student voices from every high school in the county that provided amazing insight for both the MCPSS and the community.
The results of this project were presented to hundreds on hand at the 3rd Annual Education Summit held at the USA Mitchell Center on April 25, 2006. These findings will be used to help the District community leaders provide more a high-quality and rigorous education for all students.
