Standards of an Azalea Trail Maid Dress

Although each girl is asked to come up with unique design for her dress, there are standards that apply to each and every dress.

Here is a list of required pieces for an Azalea Trail Maid Dress.

  • Hoop-Made of cotton with casings that hold steel rods to shape skirt.
  • Pantoloons-Made of either cotton or cotton blend material, resemble pajama pants and are worn under dress.
  • Shoes-Trail Maids wear square dancer shoes that are dyed to match the color of their dress.
  • Skirt-Worn directly over hoop. Organza over matching taffeta. Must be made in "A" line panels. Usually consist of multiple layers of ruffles.
  • Bodice-Fitted bodice to the waistline and must be separate from skirt and other parts of dress. No sleeves are allowed and must have continuous ruffle at the top of the bodice.
  • Apron-Fits over skirt. Usually where most of the decorative design of the dress is concentrated.
  • Cummberbund with Bow and sash-Fits over waistline to add a finished appearance.
  • Gauntlets-Opened figured gloves usually made of organza that fit right above the wrist.
  • Parasol-Umbrella fashioned with similiar design of the dress.
  • Hat-Fits on the crown of your head. Lined with taffeta and must have ruffles to keep the appearance of the dress. Has detachable hat ties to keep hat on the head.
  • Cape-Made from taffeta and organza and lined with faux-fur. Only worn during winter months.
