Landon Carter is one of "those guys" in your high school. You know the ones who do whatever when they want, float through high school, and get into all kinds of trouble. One of his pranks lands a fellow student in the hospital, and now he has to do community service. This is where he meets Jamie Sullivan. Jamie is a christian girl, very devout and serious. As part of Landon's community service he must participate in the school's spring play. He asks for Jamie's help and in doing so they fall in love with each other.
