Samurai in Film

You've probably seen your share of samurai-themed works and you just weren't aware of it at the time. Most of us have seen at least five samurai films in our lifetime. If you ask most people what their favorite one was, they make look a little puzzled and say that foreign films are not the interesting. Well most people would be surprised how much they have and will enjoy these films upon watching them. Some of the most famous samurai-themed works are the brain child of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. His films have received the most praise in the samurai genre. Kurosawa has also influenced a number of well know filmmakers throughout his career. His most famous work is "The Seven Samurai". Samurai films have also inspired some the most beloved westerns of our time. If you loved "The Magnificent Seven" and "A Fist Full of Dollars", you would have enjoyed Kurosawa's "Samurai" and "Yojimbo". Those westerns by the way, are remakes of the latter. Even George Lucas has been inspired by the legend of the samurai, don't believe, who do you think the Jedi Knights are patterned after? Some of the most success movies of this era have based on samurais, the latest of a line of blockbusters is the infamous "Kill Bill" saga. Not only did Quentin Tarantino re-make a Japanese classic, but he re-introduced the samurai to western culture. If you taste run a bit on the romantic side, you should check out "The Last Samurai", containing a mixture of fact and fiction, it was released in 2003. The plot centers around the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion led by the infamous Saigo Takamori. Urban fans probably loved Forest Whitaker's "Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai". Regardless how your taste run, I have provided a list of some movies that you may find entertaining, after all you seen more of these films then thought.
