FLORENCE
FLORENCE
This is a picture of The Ponte Vecchio over the Arno River in Florence. The picture was taken by my father in June 2004.

When visiting Florence, we learned a great deal about its rich history. According to our tour guide Daniella, a Florence native, Florence was the center of the Italian Renaissance, and is often refered to as the "Athens of the Middle Ages." During the thirteenth century, Florence became the center of art, science, architecture, and philosophy that revolutionized European society.

Many of the marvels of the Italian Renaissance are still in pristine condition, and can be viewed or visited today. Some of the most famous sites to visit are:

The Ponte Vecchio: the market bridge that crosses the Arno River

The Duomo and Giotto's Tower: which stand as the architectural jewels of the city

The Piazza della Repubblica: one of Italy's largest and most famed piazzas

Florence is also a great place to view the timeless pieces of art created by Donatello, Michealangelo, Da Vinci, and Boticelli. These works of art are displayed in the renound Bargello, the Academia dell-Arte del Disegno (which features "the David") and the Pitti Palace, which features the Medici Family's former private art collection.

Essentially, Florence is a center of culture and history. When visiting Florence, remember that it is not a one-day stop. Set aside at least a few days to explore this Renaissance jewel.
