MONTEPULCIANO
MONTEPULCIANO
This is a picture of the city of Montepulciano on its hilly terain. The picture was taken by my father in June 2004.

Montepulciano is often refered to as the "City on a Hill". Initially, the hill-top placement was for military strategy and advantage, however, it now provides a beautiful view of the rolling Italian hills.

The city itself also has some lovely sights. The first is the Palazzo Neri-Urselli. This palace houses some of the most beautiful Tuscan art in Italy.

You should also make a point to visit the city's cathedral. The facade features scarce decoration, however the inside is breathtaking. I found that unlike many of the cathedreals in Italy, this cathedral was quiet and un-crowded. It was by far my most favorite cathedral in all of Italy.

When dining in Monetpulciano, be sure to try their Pecorino cheese. This versatile cheese is made from sheep's milk and can range from soft and creamy to hard and salty depending on its age. Also be sure to stop in a local Enoteca and pick up a bottle of the Nobile wine. This particular wine is made soley in the Tuscan hillside around Montepulciano.
